The night before we went to CAT we were prepping the gifts when we began to see that we had just one problem. We had suggested to the ladies that they bring wrist watches for the teenage boys in the shelter, but with the recent arrival of 17 year old Jorge, we were realizing that a wrist watch just wouldn't be appropriate, because Jorge is blind.
The day before, during a visit, we had learned from Jorge that he was fascinated by music, and that in his recent days of feeling anxious he was dying to have a way to calm himself down. What more could we need to know. Jorge loves music. Jorge needs a Christmas gift. God did the prompting, and someone decided to give Jorge their MP3 player, and someone else donated their cell phone charger with an adapter so that he could charge it directly from a wall outlet, and not need a computer.
We filled the MP3 with all of the only Spanish music options that we had at our finger tips. That just so happened to be all Christian praise and worship...but what better way to minister to this young man who point blank told us that music soothes him.
For me, being with Jorge as he received that gift was one of my highlights of the week. I sat with him as he opened it, and be began to take a moment to discover the MP3 player with his fighers. He face kept lighting up with joy. I then began to slowly explain what each button was, how to use it, how to connect the headphones, how to charge it, and the works. He was literally like a little child at Christmas...it was exactly what he had asked for, and he couldn't have been more content.
