The Changed Life of a Van Driver

I love how God crosses our paths with people - especially when it's not at all what we were expecting. Take for instance, an unsuspecting van driver.

During our first ever missions team here in Cancun, God brought an incredible man across our path. His name is Mauro. He works for the van rental company that we "happened" to use that week. His boss was the friend of a man we met, who sold us some insurance...but the long story made short is that God intended for our paths to cross - I'm sure of it.

Mauro has a great heart. When we met him he did not profess to know the Lord, but yet there was just something special about him. He was already being moved by God. God had already begun to give him a heart for the hurting, for the needy, for the hopeless. God had already given him a desire to reach out to others - to be a helping hand. And now, God crosses his path with Back2Back Cancun - and although I'm not entirely sure where the story is headed, I just have a strong feeling that it's got a great ending.

You see, during the first couple of hours that I had met Mauro I had this funny feeling that he might one day work with us, but I didn't even know him. Mauro had a lot of questions about us. What were we about? Who did we serve? Why do we serve? But soon the loudest, and most repeated question became, "How can I be involved?" Somehow, I believe the Lord has allowed himself to be seen in the things that we are about, and the things we are doing here in Cancun. And whatever it is that God has allowed Mauro to see, well...it's attractive to him...he wants to be a part of it...he wants more.

Mauro and his family ended up joining our group for church on Sunday, he joined in with us on his day off, and he even offered to help with an early morning airport run that was not during his normal work hours. The final day that the men were here we invited Mauro to join us for a time of prayer. It was a precious moment as he spoke up during the prayer to ask, "Can I say something?"...and then he went on to give thanks to God in his own simple, child-like faith. It was incredible. I love watching someone who is "getting it" for the very first time. It's inspiring, it's miraculous...watching a heart understand who the Lord is for the very first time.

I cannot wait to watch what God wants to continue to do in and through the life of Mauro. I truly hope that he continues to allow our paths to cross.
